    Storybooks for Patag Elementary School

    11/15/2010

Signing of the Deed of Donation for the official turnover of 500 storybooks to the Patag Elementary School. November 12, 2010 was a red-letter day for the Patag Elementary School in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo.

Catering to 265 pupils from Grades one to six, 40 Kindergartners, five day care pupils with 11 teachers, the school has only ten classrooms and one room for agriculture class/shop. These classrooms were constructed in the 1960’s and are only renovated if funds are available. No new classrooms have been constructed. The school caters to pupils from barangays Barotac Nuevo and Bagombong and is rated top 10 within the district out of 23 schools in NAT scoring.
Residents of the area rely on farming and gravel and sand quarrying for income.  In terms of education, three to four students drop out of each grade level every year mainly because of farming and household chores.  The principal, in fact, has to go to the barrios to encourage parents to send children to school.  Failures are also due to the inability to read, which falls under the DepEd’s ‘No read, no move” policy.

The red-letter day saw Tan Yan Kee Foundation donate 500 storybooks to the school in order to address a gap in reading interest and comprehension.

Dr. Julio Villanueva, Barotac Nuevo DepEd District Supervisor said that the books will cater to the whole district and will aid in their Reading Readiness Program.  “We will need these books to answer the problem of non-readers.  These pupils have been neglected in terms of access to storybooks.  We need to start from the community of parents and children of school age in encouraging them to read.  For teachers and their pupils, we encourage them to use the library and storybooks”, he added.

School Principal Johnny Betito advised users “to take good care of the storybooks, open and read everyday, know the characters especially in the classics, and for teachers to do their best to use the storybooks.”

Aside from Dr. Villanueva and Mr. Betito, others present during the turnover were:

Philip Morris Tobacco Fortune Corporation’s Branch Manager Jerry Malmis and Asst. BM Andrew Lim, Tanduay Branch Manager Julian Villanueva, Airphil Express Branch Manager Jane Go and Supervisor Rocky Fetisan, PNB Branch Manager Jaybert Ong, Allied Bank Area Head Glenn de la Cruz, and PAL Branch Manager Juancho Dimaguila.
