September 17, 2010 marked the day when the 12th batch of the University of the East-Tan Yan Kee Foundation Scholars were honored during the annual recognition day rites held at the Century Park Hotel’s Grand Ballroom. No less than Tan Yan Kee Foundation Chairman & President and University of the East Chairman & CEO Dr. Lucio C. Tan graced the occasion to personally greet the SY 2010-2011 scholars numbering some 206 (203 enrolled in UE, 3 in UERMMMC); also present were past scholars and grantees of recent years. Dr. Tan was joined by officers and faculty members of the University and the Foundation. Dr. Cielito Tamban, belonging to the first batch of scholars in 1998, shared his experiences and struggles as a then aspiring medical student. At present, he has already begun sowing the seeds of his perseverance, being a practicing doctor at the Philippine General Hospital. He challenged the present scholars to make full use of the opportunity to prove that they are indeed worthy of the scholarship grant by excelling in their studies and in the future, in their chosen careers. Dr. Tan, for his part, reminded the scholars that they enjoy a special privilege yearned by many others. He also urged them continue working hard while maintaining discipline and dedication in pursuit of knowledge and later, be of service to the less fortunate. |
