    TYKFI-ABI MEDICAL SCHOLARS RETURN FROM OVERSEAS TRAINING

    MANILA, Philippines — Five scholars of the Tan Yan Kee Foundation Inc. have returned to serve the country after taking special advanced studies in various medical fields in different institutions overseas last year, according to Dr. Lucio C. Tan, chairman and president of TYKFI.
    The scholars, all licensed and practicing medical doctors, were selected and screened by a team of medical experts under the TYKFI-Asia Brewery Inc. (ABI) Medical Specialty Scholarship Program.

    The 2023 batch of doctors included Ma. Hanna Monica Sollano, who trained in autoimmune diseases and musculoskeletal ultrasound; Bryan Christopher Lao, advanced therapeutic endoscopy; Mabel Angela Sarita, advanced endoscopy and pancreaticobiliary diseases; Marie Abigail Chan, advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgery in digestive, general and Bariatric surgery, and Hasmin Hannah Lara-Layno, pediatric otorhinolaryngology.

    Sollano took her training at the Department of Rheumatology of the Keio University Hospital in Tokyo, Japan on a full scholarship.

    Lao trained at the Chinese University of Hongkong-Institute of Digestive Diseases and the Prince of Wales Hospital where he handled advance therapeutic endoscopy procedures.

    Sarita also trained in advanced endoscopy, specifically pancreaticobiliary diseases at the Kobe University Hospital in Kobe, Japan.

    Chan learned new techniques and had hands-on experiences in advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgery from exceptional mentors from the IRCAD in Taiwan and bariatric, metabolic surgery from the China Medical University Hospital in Taichung, also in Taiwan.

    Lara-Layno attended a training program in pediatric otorhinolaryngology at the KK Women and Children’s Hospital in Singapore.

    ​Meanwhile, the TYKFI-ABI Scholarship Program sent a new batch of three doctors to various overseas institutions in 2023. They are John Alfred Raphael Pangilinan (Graduate School of Medicine in Kobe University), Juan Franco Felipe (Funabashi Orthopedic Hospital in Chiba), and Anthony Philip Calimag (Cancer Institute Hospital of the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research in Tokyo, Japan).

    Medical professionals and health care providers continue to grow with the developments in the medical field to provide much needed attention to different health struggles.
    ​    A physician by the name of Lester Bryan Co had the opportunity to become a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California through the assistance of the TYKFI-ABI Medical Specialty Scholarship Program. For one year, Dr. Co was able to practice his postdoctoral research fellowship in the Koong Lab at Stanford’s Radiation Oncology Department where they worked mainly on basic science research involving novel compounds combined with radiation in cells and mice.

    The TYKFI-ABI Medical Specialty Scholarship Program continues to make it possible for many specialists and doctors to pursue medical specialty education abroad. 

    ​Through this program, each and every doctor who leaves and returns to the country with renewed medical knowledge makes modern, up-to-date and quality medical service available for our countrymen. With the newly-acquired medical skills of our scholars and state-of-the-art facilities of our hospitals in the country, the Philippines will  also emerge  as a top option for medical tourism in Asia. 
        In 2015, Dr. Jeremy James C. Munji , a TYKFI-ABI scholar in Orthopaedics, Arthroscopic and Reconstructive Shoulder Surgery, was accepted in a world-class fellowship in Annecy, France. He had the opportunity to work with Dr. Laurent Lafosse, a noted surgeon from Paris and an inventor of several surgical instrumentations for shoulder treatments and author of many studies and book chapters. 
        Dr. Munji operated and trained in the Clinique General in Annecy, France and Clinique General Beaulieu Geneva, Switzerland, both known for delivering  first-class medical care.

    The Asia Brewery Medical Specialty Scholarship Program recently gave scholarship grants to two beneficiaries for post graduate studies abroad.   

    Dr. Janet Elcano is currently doing her post graduate studies in Clinical Fellowship Training in Cardiac Electrophysiology at Yonsei University Health System-Division of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine in Seoul, South Korea.

    Dr. Allen Andrew Sy is doing post graduate studies in Clinical Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the National University Heart Center in Singapore.

    ABI Scholar Completes Australian Training

    ASIA Brewery Medical Specialty Scholar Dr. Jonard Co recently completed his Research Fellowship in Therapeutic Endoscopy at the University of Sydney’s Westmead Hospital in Sydney, Australia and is now back in the Philippines.

    Dr. Co is a graduate of the Unversity of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERMMMC). He specialized in Gastroenterology at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST). He then proceeded for his further training in the use of Endoscopic Ultrasound in Australia.
