Tan had the opportunity to meet and discuss with top officials of University of California – Davis (UC Davis) on two occasions when the latter came to Manila in April and June 2019. Get-togethers are a time of building and rebuilding relationships to reinforce the strong points of the group and community. It is also a time to celebrate and be merry especially during holiday season.
TYKFI Shares Dr. Lucio C. Tan Legacy Forest Project Features With University of Tokyo Grad Students3/7/2019
The Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc. cordially received the faculty and 15 graduate students from University of Tokyo Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture on August 27, 2018 at the Dr. Lucio C. Tan Legacy Forest Project site in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija where they observed the Foundation’s program on sustainable agroecosystems, environment rehabilitation practices, and agricultural services management which follow international ESG (environment, social, and governance) standards
Now on its fourth year, the Dr. Lucio C. Tan Legacy Forest Project has covered a vast area in restoring degraded forests and protecting the existing ones under the Foundation’s Rebuilding the Community and the Environment Program.
The Dr. Lucio C. Tan Legacy Forest Project was launched in 2014 with the goal of mitigating the effects of climate change and providing livelihood opportunities to many unemployed residents in reforestation sites initially at the UPLB Land Grant in Laguna and Quezon. Since that year, the project has expanded to cover a bigger area in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Foundation officers and staff joined Legacy Forest Project workers, including supervisors and planters in attending the first ever Holy Mass celebrated at the St. Francis Chapel near the project site in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija last December 23, 2015. During a recent visit to Carranglan, Nueva Ecija, the Legacy Forest team met with local private landowners who initiated reforestation efforts not only to protect their own property but also to help the community to preserve the environment.
To date, the Legacy Forest farmers have planted tree seedlings and crops on a total of 279 hectares of deforested land in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija. The Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc. and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the development of an area approximately 930 hectares portion of the Pantabangan-Carranglan Watershed Forest Reserve (PCWFR) situated in Barangay R.A. Padilla, Carranglan, Nueva Ecija last June 9, 2015.
The project aims to develop the area for the following purposes: multi-purpose tree plantation (fuel wood and timber), agro-forestry plantation and ecotourism development project. The signatories for the Department of Natural Resources were Mr. Francisco E. Milla, Jr., Regional Director, DENR Region 3 and Mr. Arthur C. Salazar, Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services, DENR, Region 3. The signatories for the Foundation were Ms. Juanita Tan Lee, Assistant Treasurer and Corporate Secretary and Atty. Erwin C. Go, Legal Counsel, LTGC and Mr. Marlo M. Mendoza, Associate Dean, UPLB-College of Forestry and Natural Resources and Former DENR Asst. Secretary. The TYKFI project manager has already mobilized his team of planters who will plant seedlings as part of the Carranglan multi-purpose tree plantation project by August 2015 at the start of the rainy season. |
