The Tan Yan Kee Foundation participated actively in the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela that welcomes each schoolyear opening. The activity, held during the National school Maintenance Week enjoins various stakeholders in the community to help in preparing schools for the opening of classes in June. The efforts may be in the form of school clean up, minor repair of classrooms and facilities, and the like.
Secretary Armin Luistro, FSC led the head office kick-off caravan last May which started at the DepEd Pasig office and culminated at the Bago Bantay Elementary School where clean-up and roof repair were done. Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista showed his support to DepEd by gracing the occasion. The Foundation also participated in the kick-off caravan held at Sta. Fe, Nueva Vizcaya which was led by DepEd officials and Mayor Teodorico Padilla, Jr. The caravan was highlighted by an education summit held at the Sta. Fe Forest Park Convention Hall. A cemented stairway/footpath leading up to the hilltop Tan Yan Kee Elementary School was also constructed, which now puts the 20 to 30-minutes hike along steep and winding paths a thing of the past for schoolchildren and teachers. This was done through the combined effort of the Foundation, the local government’s municipal engineer, head teacher of the Tan Yan Kee Elementary School, and the barangay officials and residents of Balete, Nueva Vizcaya. |
