As school children all over the country prepared themselves for the opening of classes last June, the Department of Education (DepEd) and its private partners, including the Tan Yan Kee Foundation Inc., also worked double time on Brigada Eskwela, the department’s annual school maintenance project.
For many years, TYKFI has been an active participant of the week-long program, considered as one of the most successful projects of the DepEd which aims to prepare schools for the coming school year and to promote volunteerism among the members of the community. TYKFI conducted its Brigada Eskwela in three elementary schools in Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur on May 28 to 30, 2015. The heads of the participating schools extended the invitation to all volunteers who are willing to contribute their time, effort, and resources for the repair, cleaning and repainting of their buildings and facilities. TYKFI’s Ms. Elizabeth T. Alba supervised the Foundation’s Brigada Eskwela project which included the donation of materials for the repainting of roofs in Babayoan Elementary School and Nagtenga Elementary School and the installation of gutters and repainting of roofs in Sidaoen Elementary School. The Ilocos Sur Brigada Eskwela was successful and brought together school officials, parents, students, and private organizations in an effort to clean and repair schools in time for enrolment the following week and the start of classes last June 1. During the weeklong program, the volunteers, including military personnel helped repaint the roofs and classrooms, fix damaged furniture and repair broken windows, among others. |
