Tan Yan Kee Partner Foundation for Upgrading the Standard of Education has revised its orientation program for principals with the school administrators receiving a briefing on the content of the five learning areas—English, Elementary Science, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics—through learning stations.
Under the plan initiated by the FUSE training committee headed by Dr. Evelina Vicencio, the course will be divided into five groups with each group staying in the learning station for 10 minutes and then move on to the next station, round-robin fashion.
- DVD player TV/computer showing video of the learning area.
- support materials (TSM) /CDs of the learning area on display.
- Annotated episodes of the learning area posted on the wall.
The program is part of the group’s training course for teachers of elementary and public high schools that utilizes Constec (Continuing Studies via Technology) VCD lessons and TSMs in helping mentors gain more knowledge and techniques in teaching the five subjects.
The principals were included in the program to enable them to know the courses’ methods and strategies as they are the key to classroom application of what their FUSE-trained teachers learned.
As recommended by the training committee, the principals will discuss their roles and activities in relation to the use of video-based instruction and sharing of group output during the whole-day session.
Besides the program for principals, the TSM in the Sciences had been revised, which entailed the inclusion of the latest findings and discoveries in the field and checking misconceptions in Science. The TSM in English is also under revision.
The TSMs were designed to optimize the use of the videotapes and serve as the basic accompanying reference for teachers.
Relatedly, 137 teachers and 52 principals from Metro Manila’s elementary and high schools participated in the June staging of the two-day program at the FUSE Learning Center for Teachers on Roxas Blvd. , Ermita.
Thirty-four attended the Elementary Science training course; 33 English; Physics and Chemistry, 35 each. The trainers were Crescencia Joaquin, Elvira Galvez, Lourdes Tayao, Marilu Madrunio, Olivia Ungson, John Vincent Salayo, Karen Cardinoza, Elena Cutiongco, Elizabeth Ibuyan and Remy Naynes. ν
