The Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc. and the Foundation for Upgrading the Standard of Education in partnership with the Department of Education conducted from April 10 to 14 a 5-day content training program for 123 public elementary school teachers from Ilocos Sur (Sta Cruz, San Juan and Sta. Lucia)  and Nueva Vizcaya (Sta. Fe), and held at the FUSE office/facility.
The program covered English, Elementary Science and Health, and Mathematics and was conducted by experts including: Dr. Sterling Plata, Dr. Lina B. Diaz de Rivera, Mr. Nikolas Galvez, Jr. (English); Dr. Josefina Belen, Ms. Evelyn Josue, Mr. Romil Luna (Elementary Science and Health); and Dr. Milagros Ibe, Dr. Ma. Nympha Joaquin (Mathematics).  Aside from upgrading the standards of education especially in Math, Science & English, the program also aims to provide teachers with proper training and new techniques that will enhance their teaching skills.

At the end of five fruitful days, here are some comments from participants.
“The Project helped me a lot on enhancing my appreciation and understanding of my job as a whole, and in making improvised materials to be used in experiments due to lack of instruments.”--Carolina Asuncion (Sevilla Elementary School, Sta. Cruz  District)

“The discussions and learnings are a big help for both teachers and eventually pupils, because all these lead to better teaching.”—Catherine Raquepo  (Sta. Cruz Central School, Sta. Cruz District)

“As a teacher who has not taught  science for 11 years, I consider the program excellent because it refreshes my knowledge about the subject matter.”—Evangeline Ampuan (Sevilla Elemenetary School, Sta Cruz Dist.)

“The techniques I’ve learned will enhance my skills in teaching Mathematics.”--Jennifer E. Tria (Sta. Cruz Central School)

“I have learned how to design or to make my lessons more fun through the use of the newly designed activities presented during the program. It makes me aware of the techniques that I have already been using in class and the things that would help me improve. All the handouts issued are full of new information that will help me make my lessons more fun and easier for my pupils.”—Lorenzo H. Jaramel (Sevilla Elementary School)

“I particularly like learning how to improvise materials to be used in experiments when there is a lack of instruments, as well as doing research and investigatory  project.”--Mae Rosario P. Gumallaoi (Sevilla Elementary School)

“New techniques and shortcuts are very helpful. I also hope that more training programs based on elementary curriculum can be held.”--Michelle E. Jaramilla (Sagat Elementary School)

“I like the new ideas and techniques.  It would also be good if we are informed of materials to bring.
--Rina Joy V. Dauz (Sta. Cruz Central School)

“The technique shared by the trainers will be useful and effective”--Rowena Cabael (Sta. Cruz Central School)

“I learned from the program how to improve/enhance my skills in the subject I teach, as well as appreciating and understanding my job as a whole.”--Sherwin T. Torres (Sevilla Elementary School)

“I learned a lot from the program like the application of the 7 UBD keywords which are very effective for teachers and students. I learned that UBD is not only applicable for the secondary  level but also applicable for elementary.”--Victoria R. Tejada (Sta. Cruz Central School)

“The new shortcuts in math relate to arithmetic, geometry and algebra through illustrations and the language of mathematics. It’s an excellent training. Thank you very much!”--Catherine Valudino San (Isidro Elementary School)

“The project provided me additional information and better understanding of the science subject which I think I failed to convey to my pupils. Kindly include  also in the program how to construct improvised instructional materials that we can use in our classrooms. Also, please provide us with textbooks in science because we are only using one or two textbooks in our class. More power to you.”--Emelyn C. Pascua (Camindoroan Community School San Juan Dist.)

“I suggest that we be given the opportunity to attend all the training programs in Science and Math, so that we can continuously gain knowledge about the said subjects.”
--Gally Rose S. Soliven ( San Juan South Central School)

“It enriched my skills and broadened my knowledge and ideas.”--Glenn V. Villon (Labnig Elementary School San Juan Dist.)

“The program enhanced my knowledge, thus things I learned previously were refreshed.”--Jocelyn V. Arellano (Solotsolot Elementary School San Juan Dist.)

“They should also teach us how to make lesson plans using UBD. This should be added to the program because they told us that there will come a time that lesson plans will be done in UBD.”--Ma Leonora V. Torricer (Barbar Elementary School San Juan Dist.)

“The program makes us more competitive and  enriches our knowledge and skills.  I believe this is excellent and we should continue making teachers more competitive.”--Marvin E. Corpuz (Nagsuputan Elementary School San Juan Dist.)

“My comprehension about mathematics was strengthened. This program makes me more effective in teaching the subject, and refreshes and strengthens my ability to solve word problems applying to mathematical principles.”--Maybell B Lagasca (Saoang Elementary School San Juan Dist.)

“If only our trainers can come to Ilocos so that more teachers can attend the seminar.”--Ria Lynne C. Dizon (Bacsil Community School San Juan Dist.)

“It is responsive to our needs as teachers, makes us knowledgeable, and is very useful.”--Elisa F. Caballero (Sta. Lucia Central School)

“The trainers were all at their best during the seminar. I also suggest that the program puts further focus on the different approaches, methods and techniques in teaching elementary pupils.”--Froilan V. Guerero (Palali Elementary School Sta. Lucia Dist.)

“It would be better if we were given more time for this seminar. Feeling ko ‘parang bitin’. But I learned a lot & I enjoyed.”--Glenda Blanza (Sta. Lucia North Central School)

“It helps in self-improvement, building self-confidence, gaining more knowledge in the subject area (mathematics) especially for a new teacher like me. I’m very satisfied and very much thankful that I’m one of the few  given the opportunity to attend a seminar like this.”--Sharon Mangaccat (Bacneng Elementary School)

“We hope we can try other subjects too and other teachers may also try this  wonderful seminar/ training. Thanks a lot!”—Melina Libid (Sta. Fe Central School)

“The program enhances professionalism in education.”--Allan Paclit (Tan Yan Kee Elementary School Sta. Fe  District)

“It will be good to include modules on construction of objectives and lesson planning or syllabus as additional instructional materials.”--Aurora V. Bautista (Sta Fe Central School)

“More training in computer familiarity and use.”--Nida F. Tampoc (Baracbac Elementary School)

“I learned new ideas and terminologies and proper grammar. It refreshed my knowledge on how to balance elements.” Excellent! I have gained enough knowledge about the subject matter especially because I’m a science major.”--Melody D Mallo (Cauco Elementary School)

“Very informative in making simple materials for science tools used in experiments.”--Nita T. Agmaliw  (Atbu Elementary School)

“I was able to learn how to update lesson planning and techniques.”
    —Bernabe Mariano (Atbu Elementary School)

      FUSE Teachers Training

An important mission is educational reform. This is a critical aspect of the Tan Yan Kee Foundation’s partnership with the FUSE or the Foundation for Upgrading the Standard of Education.  This is carried out through the training-the-trainors method, with the end result of improving teaching standards and competency particularly in the subject areas of English, Mathematics, and the Sciences.

The program revolves around regular Teacher Training workshops, distribution of Continuing Studies via Technology (CONSTEC) in CD format, and the Science and Engineering Education Project (SEEP) in partnership with the Department of Education, Ateneo de Manila University, and De La Salle University.

Since its inception in  1994 up to 2008, FUSE has trained 13,687 teachers, circulated 21,011 journals, and distributed 386,494 training video computer disks  nationwide, even reaching remote areas.
