FORUM FOR EDUCATORS Schools’ best practices in a chosen field of learning was the topic anew of FUSE (Foundation for Upgrading the Standard of Education) as it staged its 148th general assembly with the deans of UST College of Architecture, UP College of Science and an assistant professor of Ateneo de Manila University as resource speakers. UST dean John Joseph Fernandez (from left) spoke about the university’s best practices in architecture course; assistant professor Jhoanna Michelle Paterno of Ateneo’s English Department, “Literature;” and UP dean Caesar Saloma, “Science.”

During the forum, a question was raised regarding the implementation of the curriculum or teaching methods in the schools’ provincial campuses. Paterno informed the assembly that they “conduct training for teachers of literature using these approaches for the different Ateneo schools.”

The university’s Center for Language Teaching holds the training of teachers at the school’s provincial campuses in Naga, Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro and Davao cities.

“While we would like to expose our students to the best of the western world, we would like to balance it by using lesser known writers of the first world. We try to diversify our understanding of text [literature],” Paterno added, whose presentation at FUSE 148th general assembly was described as informative and could be used as models by other schools.

“Literature is essentially creative thinking and we want our students to enjoy the stories. On the other hand, we don’t subscribe to the idea that not every reaction is necessarily valid. You make a distinction. There are more valid interpretations and less valid interpretations.  We want to make sure that the judgment that they make, in effect, have objective bases,” she stressed.

What about the teaching of biology in Los Banos, Cebu, Iloilo? Are there any methods in which best practices in UP Diliman are also applied in other UP campuses?

Saloma said the UP system holds seminars and faculty development programs that would ensure that students enrolled in other UP campuses would benefit from the UP teaching methods.

Fernandez, on the other hand, said the College strives to uphold the Thomasian ideals of competence, compassion and commitment through a sound curriculum development, among others.

He said Filipinos are one of the world’s best architects, noting that Dubai’s Burj Al Arab was designed by a Filipino. “Of course, his name did not appear in the credits as the construction of the structure was undertaken by a multinational architectural company”, he said.

      FUSE Teachers Training

An important mission is educational reform. This is a critical aspect of the Tan Yan Kee Foundation’s partnership with the FUSE or the Foundation for Upgrading the Standard of Education.  This is carried out through the training-the-trainors method, with the end result of improving teaching standards and competency particularly in the subject areas of English, Mathematics, and the Sciences.

The program revolves around regular Teacher Training workshops, distribution of Continuing Studies via Technology (CONSTEC) in CD format, and the Science and Engineering Education Project (SEEP) in partnership with the Department of Education, Ateneo de Manila University, and De La Salle University.

Since its inception in  1994 up to 2008, FUSE has trained 13,687 teachers, circulated 21,011 journals, and distributed 386,494 training video computer disks  nationwide, even reaching remote areas.
