Tan Yan Kee Manpower Development Center recently trained 24 out-of-school young people from the community of Sta. Ana, Manila. They learned the basics of computer use and the three commonly used Microsoft Office Applications—Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
The learning sessions were divided into two parts: classroom lecture and actual hands-on application. The trainees further honed their newly learned skills by countless exercises given by the trainors from the University of the East Management Information System Department.
Partner organization, the Zone One Tondo Organization (ZOTO), was responsible for the selection of the participants, who all came from indigent families. Most have only managed to reach high school level before they had to drop and find work in order to contribute to the family income. This is the second such partnership with ZOTO, the first one being in 2009 where 20 kids from the same neighborhood were given hands-on computer training.
The Manpower Development Center of the Tan Yan Kee Foundation was established to provide employment or livelihood opportunities for the marginalized, by equipping them with useful skills and opportunities.
