The Department of Education recently conducted training on the use of the Bright Minds Read Beginning Reading Kit for 15 public elementary schools in Lian, Batangas. Tan Yan Kee Foundation sponsored four of these schools which are all located in the vicinity of Absolut Chemicals, Inc., an alcohol plant and sister company in the Lucio Tan Group. These four schools are: Malaruhatan Elementary School, Bagong Pook ES, Bungahan ES, and the San Diego ES.
The training not only introduced the BMR program to the teachers but also served as a refresher to their reading, listening, comprehension, and speaking skills. DepEd trainor Dr. Nilda Garcia, began the activity by discussing common teaching mistakes that have made negative marks on pupils over the years. A considerable part of the day was devoted to oral exercises and activities aimed at better teaching methods.
The BMR kits, comprising of 33 big books and matching student activity sheets, are made available to the schools at the start of classes. The program’s goal is to instill the reading habit among grade one pupils and better reading skills and comprehension among higher grade levels, using the story-telling method as a springboard.
As a culminating activity, organizers of the event are planning on holding a storytelling contest for pupils of the school-participants on February 2010, enough time for the school to have fully-utilized the Bright Minds Read Kit and hopefully to have improved their reading and comprehension skills.
